Preparing Your CV
A good CV will open many doors
There are no magic formulas with CV writing — resist the
temptation to copy your mate's CV just because he landed a plum job.
Its been said before but a blank piece of paper and some serious
soul-searching is the name of the game. Think laterally.
Your CV is your sales document providing examples of your work
and matching your credentials to the requirements of the client. It
is the means by which you initially market yourself to companies you
are keen to pursue a career with. While it is important to make your
CV appropriate to the kind of job that you are looking for, you must
be honest about your commercial experience and qualifications. IT is
one of the few areas where you will be quite certain to get caught
out if you are economical with the truth.
To get the position that your skills portfolio merits it is vital
that you convey all the right messages to prospective employers.
- Contractors & Permanents — People will be most interested in the most
recent work you've done. Provide a summary of the work, your
role, your contributions and the outcomes.
- Senior Executives — It's the results you've achieved that matter most.
- Graduates — you may not have ten years experience in your
chosen field but you probably will have done something that has
built up the kind of skills that are required for the position.
For example, gap year, running student societies. Try to keep it recent
— talking about what you did at junior school may raise some
doubts in employers minds.
