Top ten tips for your CV
Infopeople's top ten tips for preparing the right CV.
- Keep it precise: write
down everything about yourself (professional, career and personal)
and then cut it back, focusing on key points.
- Easy to read: keep it clear — the easier it is to read, the more
likely it will receive attention.
- Chronological is logical: don't expect the reader to have to
investigate your CV to find out what you've done. Reverse
Chronological is best.
- Summarise: a short skills and experience summary at the top of
the CV, applicable to the role you are applying for, allows the
employer to get a quick view of your suitability for the post.
- Be honest: be as objective as you can and don't under cover or
over sell yourself. Get a third party that understands your skills
and experience to give an objective view.
- Be an achiever: list achievements as well as skills and
qualifications.
- Be interesting: include non-work interests and hobbies but keep
it safe.
- Ghost write: prepare your CV as far as possible in the third
person.
- Referee: don't include contacts for references — make them
'available on request'
- Keep it up to speed: update your CV every six months, whether you
are looking for a job or not.
