What is IT?
An overview of the information technology industry
Everyone has a view of what IT is all about. One school of
thought would give the perception that it is an industry full of
super nerds spending their entire life sitting at a PC and
transferring X amounts of dosh into their bank accounts while saving
the world from Doctor Evil.
Others believe that it is full of PlayStation wizards getting
hooked scoring the winning the goal in Fifa 99. However, Information
Technology (commonly abbreviated to IT) is the generic term for a
global industry built upon the computer-based gathering, storage,
manipulation and communication of information.
IT is an industry that changes astoundingly quickly, and it is
the source of more employment than any other industry. There is
hardly a single area of commercial and personal life that has not
been transformed in the past 30 years by the growth of the IT
industry. It has affected the way we work, shop and entertain
ourselves. Recent revolutions have seen the emergence of the
Internet, video conferencing, high-tech automation, multi-media and
so forth.
Organisations allocate considerable funds to IT as they seek to
manipulate the flow of information so that competitive advantage can
be gained. It is an area that is extremely challenging as well as
rewarding as it deals with business critical functions such as
distribution, accounting, communication, production, and key issues
such as the millennium bug and the GST.
